Just wanted to share some behind the scenes images from our recent photoshoot at the Duthie Park Winter Gardens in Aberdeen. I love photoshoot days, I get to spend the day with talented creative folks and work together to make pretty pictures, what more could you want? This time we were working with model Shannon of Colours Agency , Lou Mitchell make-up artist , Jenny Hood stylist and Steven Bedford Photographer. Here are a few instagram snaps I took on the day… (ps don’t forget you can follow us on Instagram!)
GLASSHOUSE Contemporary Craft and Design Fair at Foxlane Garden Centre, Westhill, Aberdeenshire
This week we were overwhelmed with scarf love last weekend at Glasshouse, a contemporary Craft and Design fair which was held in a huge greenhouse just outside of Westhill in Aberdeenshire. Organised by Smart Consultants and part of Aberdeenshire’s placemaking programme Be Part of The Picture , this was a two day event held at the Foxlane Garden Centre, showcasing a diverse collection of artistic enterprises – the work of local, national and international visual artists, designers and makers.
The theme for our stand was a contemporary Scottish woodland scene – We wanted to bring a little of the wild landscape that inspired the designs into the display. Three mannequins were nestled amongst a leafless white branch and sat on moss covered wooden logs of varying height to give interest. The background colours of the display I kept as neutral as possible to really set off the bold colours of the scarves . Scarves and bow ties were hung, draped, folded and tied across the table to give maximum impact, and we had our AW13 video playing on a screen to draw people in.
We had such a fantastic weekend and met so many interesting people. We were lucky enough to have the Lady Provost visit our stand, as well councillors, gallery owners, media people and most importantly of all lots of wonderful customers! Great feedback on the designs – the skull motifs proved to be a big talking point with people either loving them or hating them, but definitely noticing them!
It was also great getting to spend the weekend chatting to other designers and business owners. Our neighbours were; Ginger Pickle – online emporium of all things super cute and UK made, Mags Gray – ceramicist who creates beautiful glazed bowls and little ceramic painted birds, and Nervous Stitch – Brightly coloured and patterned knitted accessories that will make you smile! Loved having these ladies to chat to over the weekend, couldn’t have asked for better company! Our Aberdeen stockist Peltoniemi Concept Store was also there with their beautiful and tempting treats – one of these being the cute snail ornament I bought for myself who has made himself at home on my bookshelf.
All in all, a fab weekend, if any of you managed to make it along I hope you enjoyed it as much as me!

So the intention is to keep the blog updated weekly with the goings on at Helen Ruth, and the week before my BIRTHDAY seems a good a time as any to get started!!
I’ve been hard at work creating new designs for the new Spring collection. All though it doesn’t feel like it right now (we actually had SNOW yesterday!) Spring is not far away and I’m starting to wish for slippery, light and airy scarves to wear on bright and breezy days. I’ve been really influenced by the books I’ve been reading lately – A sinister fairy tale ;The Book of Lost Things’ by John Connolly and Roald Dahl’s macabre short stories with their cruel twists of fate…
The Story Teller collection is inspired by the art of telling stories, something I really loved as a child and still do. My Grandad used to make up stories and tell them to us, and we used to call them ‘Stories from the Mouth’, and I came across this quote in my newest book ‘Scottish Folk and Fairy Tales’ by Sir George Douglas talking about the study of folk stories,
“Classified, tabulated, scientifically named, they are no longer the wild free product of Nature that we knew and loved: they are become, so to speak, a collection of butterflies in a case, an album of pressed wild flowers. No doubt they are very interesting, and highly instructive; but their poetry, their brightness, the fragrance which clung about them in their native air, their native soil, is in large measure gone!”.
I loved the way he describes stories as like butterflies, and they need to be spoken to be kept alive, not trapped and analysed in book. So this is the inspiration behind the new designs – a collection of butterflies and other specimens of nature ( a few skulls, of course) that in some scarves will be trapped in bell jars and bottles, and then in the final design in the collection the butterflies will break free in an explosion of glass shards and kaleidoscopic colour!
Here’s a wee sneaky peek of this weeks photoshopping…
By next week hopefully I will have some fabric samples to show you!

Just beginning to come down from being on a massive high after filming our video last night, I think it will be better than I even imagined! Want to say a big thank you to everyone who took part, the super talented FLUX VIDEO team, Loulou Beau Make-up Artist and creator of Molly’s beautiful glowey moonbeamy look, the beautiful Molly at Esca Rose Modelling agency (total pro), Jenny Hood who created the magical sets, Grant Anderson the sneaky Mr Wolf, and Jenny Morley who was just generally FAB and kept our spirits up by singing ‘There’s something special going on’ and making copious amounts of pizza and tea. THANKYOU for being stars and I am so excited to see the results.
Thought I would share a few ‘behind the scenes’ snaps of the team hard at work.
I was lucky enough to have some free time on one of the sunniest, warmest days of the year so far. So lucky to live in such a beautiful place on days like this! I always feel inspired after going for a walk in the woods, must be something to do with growing up surrounded by trees – we were always making up stories or playing games in the woods and has probably what has led on to my over-active imagination. I like to think about all the creatures ( mythical or otherwise) and what they might get up to hidden amongst their secretive leafy little world. It’s also interesting to see what amazing things plants are capable of when left to their own devices – fallen trees that continue to grow branches at right angles straight upwards from the trunk, huge mushrooms, tangles of wild flowers and weeds, pine cones, and delicate little sorrel leaves that decorate the woodland floor like heart shape confetti. It’s so pretty, I really would recommend getting lost in the woods on a sunny day!
Last weekend I had a great time shooting the new SS collection with a really talented bunch of people. We went for a Geisha inspired theme to reflect the Cherry Blossom and Japanese influenced prints of the scarves, so there was lots of research done into getting the look right (a beautiful pinterest board was created!) and our model had her own Geisha hair accessories which really finished the look off perfectly.
It was a really fun shoot and I want to say a massive thankyou to everyone who helped out on the day, and for making it all so easy! Check out the new SS collection in ‘Shop’ to see the finished results, or visit us on facebook to see more!
Our beautiful model Kristine sat patiently while the elaborate hairstyle was created!
This handsome gent kindly modelled our new Bow Tie collection, I think we also have a new convert to the Bow tie club!
Stevie from Mnemonic Photography was our photographer for the day
Jenny was our expert stylist and also helped me do some cherry blossom sniping earlier in the day!
The afore mentioned stolen cherry blossom…shhhhhh….
The new collection ready to be photographed – by pure fluke the studio had the perfect Japapnese style room divider – how lucky!
Just thought I would include this snapshot of a bit of hemming from the previous day! Nothing like last minute preparations as usual!
